Pearls are typically assigned to four categories in the sorting process: Round/Semi-Round, Drop, Baroque, and Circle Baroque.
Round pearls are the most valuable and often most desirable of all pearl shapes. Semi-round pearls are virtually round, and will appear round when strung on a necklace or bracelet.
Near-round: These pearls are not perfectly round. Instead, they are slightly flattened or elongated, rather than being a perfect sphere. Nonetheless, they are so nearly perfect that they, too, are classified as spherical.
Drop pearls are symmetrically elongated pearls that typically take the shape of a tear-drop. These pearls are truly unique and are very valuable when a pearl has that perfect tear or pear shape.

Baroque pearls are irregular in shape and at times elongated. Many people love the unique character of these pearls. These pearls are frequently found in designer and one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces.

Circle-Baroque pearls are easily distinguished by their unique rings surrounding the pearl. This shape is most commonly found in South Sea pearls including Tahitian, Golden, and White South Sea.
